When the COVID-19 pandemic forced The Sydney Children's Choir to cancel their much loved December performances, they commissioned this online film as a gift to their audiences. The work is 'The Ground', by contemporary Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo.
The young choir members made clear that the film's subject matter should be the devastating 'Black Summer' Australian bushfire season of 2019/20. On the 21st of December 2019, one of the choristers and his family lost their home to the fires, and as a member of the Sydney Children’s Choir, his experience has instilled a personal connection to the bushfires in the 80 choir members.
The film serves as a portrait of communities affected by the fires, with the choir performing on the charred land of Gabriel’s family property, just meters from where their home stood less than a year ago. The music recording and the filming shoot were conducted safely, adhering to state government COVID-19 safety restrictions.
